The opening ceremony will take place at the famous Maracana football stadium and will begin at 1:00 am CET on Saturday (8:00 pm local time).

Poland will be represented by 245 athletes at the games, according to the Polish Olympic Committee.

The traditional opening parade will be attended by some of the athletes competing in sports including volleyball, handball, fencing, and rowing. The flag bearer will be handball player Karol Bielecki.

The Polish contingent won 10 medals at the last Olympics, which were held in London in 2012 (two gold, two silver and six bronze medals).

First competitor

Twenty-nine-year-old archer Karina Lipiarska-Pałka will be the first Polish athlete to compete at the Olympic Games in Rio.

She will take part in the qualifying round of the women's archery competition, with a total of 68 competitors from 40 countries competing for the podium.

In the qualifying round, each of them will attempt 72 shots in 12 batches of six, from a distance of 70 metres. (rg)
