Rio 2016: Polish athletes off to bumpy start at Olympics

Polish handball players have lost their first game at the Rio 2016 Olympics, while tennis players Jerzy Janowicz and Agnieszka Radwańska were knocked out in the first round.

The Polish handball team lost to Brazil 32:34 (13:16) in their first game of Group B of the Olympic handball tournament in Rio de Janeiro.

The team will on Tuesday take on European champions Germany, and will later play against Egypt, Sweden and Slovenia.

Meanwhile, Polish tennis hopeful Jerzy Janowicz was eliminated from the singles tournament after losing to Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7:5, 1:6.

Earlier, one of Poland’s biggest medal hopes, Agnieszka Radwańska, was knocked out of women’s tennis tournament at the Olympics.

Poland has won one bronze medal at the Olympics so far, with cyclist Rafał Majka mounting on the podium in the road cycling event. (rg)
