Despite Poland winning the most medals in 16 years at the recent Rio 2016 Olympics, the country's sports industry needs changing, Sports Minister Witold Bańka has said.

“There could have been more medals, but that does not mean that changes are not needed,” Bańka said.

“I would not get too bogged down in the statistics, because there could have been a few more medals, but that does not change the fact that changes are needed in various disciplines of Polish sport,” Bańka told journalists.

The Minister was speaking following the closing ceremony of the Rio Olympics in Brazil where Poles won a total of 11 medals.

The result is the best in 16 years.

The comments came in the middle of a doping scandal which has surrounded the Polish weightlifting federation. (rg)
