After a disappointing 2:2 draw with Kazakhstan in their first match in the qualifications phase, the Polish team pulled out the stops, with Lewandowski asserting his credentials as one of the world's finest strikers.

After Saturday’s win at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland are joint top of group E, alongside Montenegro and Romania, with four points after two matches.

"Our group is very evenly matched," said Lewandowski after the game.

"I hope we will win the difficult matches, get the three points and qualify [for the World Cup]," he added.

On Tuesday, Poland take on Armenia in Warsaw. (mol/pk)
