Boniek wins second term as head of PZPN

Incumbent Zbigniew Boniek has been reelected to head Poland's football association (PZPN) for a second consecutive four-year term after winning an overwhelming majority of votes.

Józef Wojciechowski, the other candidate in the election, which was held on Friday by representatives of football associations throughout Poland, was not present for Friday's vote.
It was a point of contention as to whether his absence signified his bowing out of the race.
Media had earlier reported that Wojciechowski was expected to fight a fierce battle against the incumbent PZPN leader. However the fight ended prematurely when he stormed out of the election session.
Wojciechowski's staff said he had left because he would not agree to electronic voting, as it undermined the secrecy of the ballot.
He said he would bring a clear plastic ballot box and notary public into the session and insisted on traditional voting on paper.
However, the session's regulations stated that votes would be placed electronically via machines.
“The session's regulations foresee [the use of] machines [for voting]. If someone submits a request to change the regulations on this matter, we will vote on the way of voting,” PZPN spokesman Jakub Kwiatkowski said.
Boniek secured 99 of 115 votes placed. (vb/rg)
