Kowalczyk was overtaken in her group by Norwegians Marit Bjorgen and Heidi Weng, and was eliminated from the competition in Norway as a result.
Overall, she was classified 16th in Friday’s event.
Kowalczyk is a double Olympic Champion and a double World Champion.
She is also the only skier to have won the Tour de Ski four times in a row and one of only two female skiers to win the FIS Cross-Country World Cup three times in a row.
Kowalczyk holds the all-time record for the most wins in the Tour de Ski, with 14 competitions won and 29 podiums in total.
