After rain delayed the match Radwańska, ranked the world's no. 6 by the WTA, lost the first two games to Mertens, who is ranked 80th, before winning the next five games and taking the first set.

In the second set, Mertens played aggressively in an attempt to put Radwańska on the defence, but the Pole dominated, wrapping up the match in 70 minutes.

“We have never played against each other before and I did not know what to expect,” Radwańska said after the match, adding that she was glad to have won.

She will face American Catherine Bellis in the next round on Wednesday.
