The 2010 world champion was airlifted to hospital for emergency surgery after he crashed during a training lap ahead of an upcoming event in Chełmno, in northern Poland.

“His condition is very serious and there is a danger that he will never return to a career in sport,” the surgeon, Marek Harat, said.

The 46-year-old racer sustained a spinal cord injury, Harat said, adding that it was too soon to say whether Gollob would fully recover.

“After a few weeks will we be able to say more,” Harat said. (vb/pk)
