Prosecutors have launched an investigation into Polish speedway racer Tomasz Gollob's Sunday crash, in which he injured his spine, a spokesman for the prosecution has said.

Prosecutors are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and will want to speak with Gollob, once the doctors give them the green light.

Meanwhile, Gollob is still weak, according to Robert Włodarski, the head of intensive care at the hospital in Bydgoszcz, in Poland's north, where the former world champion is being treated.

“People from our unit have started intense rehabilitation,” Włodarski said, adding that "a patient who has come out of an induced coma and is generally in a serious condition" cannot perform simple tasks, such as holding a glass.

The doctor also said that Gollob was grateful for the large number of letters he has received.

The 46-year-old 2010 world champion speedway racer injured his spine, broke his ribs and bruised his lungs in an accident during a training lap ahead of a competition in Chełmno, in northern Poland, on Sunday.

He was airlifted to hospital for emergency surgery and was woken out of a coma on Tuesday. (vb)
