Boxing: Szpilka to return to ring against Kownacki in July

Heavyweight boxer Artur Szpilka will return to the ring after a one-and-a-half-year hiatus, facing off against Adam Kownacki in an all-Polish 10-round fight in New York on 15 July.

“I have heavy hands and Szpilka has a weak jaw, so things will get interesting,” Kownacki recently told the Interia.pl website.
Szpilka took a punch to the face and had to be carried out of the ring on a stretcher in a fight against American titleholder Deontay Wilder in January 2015.
Szpilka had hoped to take Wilder’s belt and become Poland’s first heavyweight champion.
Talking about his return to the ring, Szpilka has said he appreciated Kownacki but had hoped for a stronger rival.
He added that his break from boxing saw him fall out of rankings and that tougher competitors did not want to risk fighting him. (vb/pk)
