Some reports suggest the Italian champions have agreed a three-year contract with the Poland international that would see the 27-year-old earning EUR 4 million a season.

The Pole has established himself as one of the Italian league’s top goalkeepers while playing for Roma for two seasons. This season Roma finished second to Juventus in Serie A, Italy’s first division.

However, Szczęsny could spend his first season in Juventus as understudy to local hero Gianluigi Buffon, who, at 39, may retire next year.

Buffon, who has been Juventus’ No. 1 keeper for more than 15 years and also captains the Italian national team, has suggested that Szczęsny will be joining him in Turin next season.

“He’s made the best choice he could make,” Buffon has said in an interview for UK-based television broadcaster Sky when asked about Szczęsny.

“I also think though that Juve have made the best choice they could make, because Szczęsny, in my opinion, had a great season last year,” Buffon added, as quoted by the UK’s Express newspaper.

He also remarked that “it’s an intelligent marriage between the strongest club and the one who was the strongest goalkeeper last year.”

“How will we adapt to each other? Easily,” Buffon also said. “One gets called up, he plays and if you’re not called on you don’t play. It’s a lot simpler than you might think.

“Because of that I think he’s really made the best choice for his present and his future, and I’m sure he’ll never regret it,” Buffon was cited as saying. (str/pk)
