The Polish national handball squad have drawn 34:34 with Serbia, definitively dashing Poland’s hopes of a place in the 2018 European championships.

The Poles were 34:32 ahead five minutes from the end of Wednesday’s qualifier in the Serbian city of Niš but were unable to hold onto their lead.

Nevertheless, the restructured Polish squad looked promising under Piotr Przybecki, making his debut as coach.

Przybecki recently took over from Talant Duyshebaev, who offered his resignation after a string of poor performances during qualifiers for the 2018 European championships in Croatia.

Duyshebaev coached the Polish team from February 2016. The squad just missed a podium spot at the Rio Olympics last year and took 17th place in the world championships in France in January.
