But the podium spot was Poland's first fencing world championship medal in seven years.

Twenty-eight-year-old Nelip was ranked 15th in the world ahead of the tournament.

“She fought brilliantly,” head of Poland's world championship team Ryszard Sobczak said, adding:

“Concentration from the start, wise tactics and good teamwork with the trainer are the main factors in winning fights”.

In her current, best-ever season, Nelip came close to a European championship title and twice won third place in world cup tournaments.

Poland's women's foil fencing team came second at the 2010 world championships in Paris. Poland's last individual title was won by Bodga Jóźwiak, who came third in the sabre category in Saint Petersburg in 2007.

Team events start in Lipsk on Monday. (vb)
