The goal on Tuesday came in the 12th minute after Bayern Munich were awarded the penalty following a foul on Lewandowski.

The Polish star striker bagged eight goals in nine games in last season’s Champions League, where his Bayern lost in the quarterfinals to Real Madrid.

Nine Polish footballers are hoping to make their mark in this season’s group stage of the Champions League.

The 32 teams in the Champions League group stage will take part in a total of six rounds of fixtures, which conclude on 6 December.

The Champions League final will be played on 26 May next year in Kiev, Ukraine. (gs)
