Women’s football: Poland beaten by Switzerland in World Cup qualifier

The Polish women’s national football squad has lost 1-2 away against Switzerland in its second World Cup qualifier.

The match, in the Swiss city of Biel on Tuesday, marked the first time the Poles lost in any competition since 7 June last year.

In their opening World Cup qualifier, Poland notched up a comfortable 4-1 home win over Belarus on Friday.

After two matches, the Poles, under coach Miłosz Stępiński, are second in their qualifying group on 3 points.

In their next World Cup qualifier, they take on Albania in an away game on 24 November.

Scotland are also in the Poles’ qualifying group, with only the top finisher guaranteed automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup in France.

The Polish team is ranked 30th in the world, Switzerland are No. 16, Scotland No. 22, Belarus No. 49, and Albania No. 73. (gs/pk)
