The Polish world No. 28 beat Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, in the opening round of the ASB Classic on Tuesday.
The Pole, a former world No. 2, scored her first victory of the new season despite a mid-match scare and a stern challenge from the Brazilian young gun, who is ranked No. 71 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).
Radwańska ended 2017 ranked outside the Top 20 for the first time in a decade.
The Pole will now take on American world No. 95 Taylor Townsend in the second round of the Auckland tournament.
