In the first round of the Australian tournament, the pair beat Romania’s Florin Mergea and Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjić 7:6, 6:3.
Kubot and Melo will now take on the winners of a match pitting Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and Austria’s Alexander Peya against Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur and the Czech Republic’s Roman Jebavy.
Kubot on Monday moved up a notch to joint world no. 1 in the Association of Tennis Professionals’ (ATP) ranking of doubles players, alongside Melo.
Kubot and Melo won the men’s doubles at the Paris Masters tennis tournament in the French capital in November.
That victory marked Kubot and Melo’s sixth title of the season, after triumphs at Wimbledon, Miami, Madrid, Halle and s'Hertogenbosch.
