Kubot and Melo booked their place in the semis on Wednesday after their quarterfinal opponents, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur and the Czech Republic’s Roman Jebavy, did not step out onto the court.

Dzumhur retired injured in the second set of a singles match against Australia's Alex de Minaur on Wednesday.

In the first round of the Australian tournament, the top-seeded Polish-Brazilian pair beat Romania’s Florin Mergea and Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjić 7-6, 6-3.

Kubot and Melo will now take on fourth-seeded pair Rohan Bopanna of India and Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France.

Kubot on Monday moved up a notch to joint world No. 1 in the Association of Tennis Professionals’ (ATP) ranking of doubles players, alongside Melo.

Kubot and Melo won the men’s doubles at the Paris Masters tennis tournament in the French capital in November.

That victory marked Kubot and Melo’s sixth title of the season, after triumphs at Wimbledon, Miami, Madrid, Halle and s'Hertogenbosch.
