Poland’s Robert Kubica has been named reserve driver for the Williams Formula 1 team this year.

The Pole, who was hoping for a F1 comeback, has missed out on a place on the British squad’s main line-up. Williams has instead chosen Russian Sergey Sirotkin to partner Canadian Lance Stroll.

The BBC quoted Kubica as saying: "My ultimate goal is to race again in F1 and this is another important step in that direction."

Kubica, 33, competed for Renault in Formula 1 in 2010, scoring three podiums in his season with the French manufacturer before an injury in a rallying crash in 2011 forced him to put his F1 career on hold.

In a statement released by Williams, Kubica said: "I feel in the best physical shape that I have ever been, but it has taken a lot of work to get to where I am now.”

The F1 season starts on March 25 with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
