World champions Germany stay No. 1, followed by Brazil and European champions Portugal, who are ahead of Argentina and Belgium. Poland and Spain have the same number of points in the ranking.

Last year Poland climbed to No. 5 in the FIFA table -- the best result for the Polish team since the world football governing body’s ranking was launched in 1992.

Poland's lowest place was 78th, in 2013.

The ranking factors in the final score of games played over the past four years, and whether the match was friendly or competitive, the rank of the opponent and other variables.

Poland have booked their place at this year’s World Cup in Russia and will play four friendlies ahead of the championships.

The World Cup kicks off on June 14 and runs until July 15. Poland take on Senegal, Colombia and Japan in the group stage of the tournament.

Colombia is in 13th place in the latest FIFA ranking. Senegal is 27th and Japan 55th.
