Polish contender Maciej Sulęcki lost on points to American former middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs in a world title eliminator for the WBA championship on Saturday.

The judges’ decision was criticised by commentators in Poland, with some saying Sulęcki should have won.

Both fighters won praise for the tenacity and technique they showed in the bout at the Barclays Center in New York.

In the final round, Sulęcki, 28, was knocked to the floor after a powerful right-hander from Jacobs caught him on the jaw. It took the Polish fighter six seconds to get up.

Before the match, Sulęcki said that he was the underdog, adding that he had “great respect” for his opponent.

Sulęcki said: “Jacobs had bone cancer.... He spent a long time being treated, and later returned right to the top, although the doctors didn’t believe it was possible... He’s a great man.”
