The tournament, at a golf course in the western town of Gorzów Wielkopolski, aimed to raise funds for the former speedway world champion, who a year ago suffered an accident that left him paralysed from the chest down.

The tournament was scheduled to be combined with an auction of items related to Gollob’s long and successful career as a speedway rider, including a motorbike and a helmet with sentimental value for fans.

All proceeds from the event as well as donations were expected to go to a foundation run by the Polish Automobile and Motorcycle Association (PZM), the governing body for motor sports in Poland, to help finance Gollob’s rehabilitation treatment.

Top Polish golfer Adrian Meronk said in a social media post: “I would like to encourage everyone to take part in the charity golf tournament for Tomasz Gollob. Let us support the champ.”

Gollob, who has tried his hand at golfing, damaged his spinal cord and suffered other injuries while training ahead of a motocross competition in northern Poland in April last year.

He told reporters in November that his sports career was over, but that he was “not going to give up” on his “long road” to recovery even though he remained confined to a wheelchair and unable to walk.
