Most of them will spring up in rural areas. "This is where they are most needed,” said Sport and Tourism Minister Witold Bańka.

The sports ministry is earmarking some PLN 100 million (USD 27.6m, EUR 23.4m) for the programme this year and next, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Municipalities, foundations and housing cooperatives will be able to apply for co-financing for such projects, aimed at people of all ages.

This year and next, a total of some 3,000 activity zones will be built, according to IAR.

Experts warned last month that Polish children are growing fatter faster than anywhere else in Europe because of a combination of a lack of physical activity and bad eating habits.
