Football: Poland thrash Lithuania 4-0 in World Cup warm-up

Poland’s national football squad on Tuesday notched up a comfortable 4-0 victory against Lithuania in their last friendly fixture ahead of the World Cup in Russia.

Poland captain Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a clinical shot from inside the box at the National Stadium in Warsaw.

The Polish goal machine found the net again from a set piece to put his team 2-0 ahead in the 33rd minute.

After half-time, rising star Dawid Kownacki put Poland three up from close range in the 71st minute, and midfielder Jakub Błaszczykowski added another goal from a penalty in the 82nd minute.

The Poles will on Wednesday head to their World Cup training base in the southern Russian resort of Sochi.

Poland manager Adam Nawałka last week named his final 23-man lineup for the World Cup.

Injured defender Kamil Glik set for late World Cup entry: team doctor

Despite initial concerns, Poland defender Kamil Glik, who sustained a shoulder injury during practice last week, has been cleared to return to training amid reports of fast recovery.

The Poland team doctor, Jacek Jaroszewski, on Tuesday said Glik would go to the tournament in Russia and should be ready to play in the squad’s third game of the World Cup group stage.

The World Cup kicks off on Thursday and runs until July 15.

Poland play Senegal on June 19, before facing Colombia on June 24 and Japan on June 28 in the group stage of the tournament.

Poland drew 2-2 with Chile in another pre-World Cup friendly in the western city of Poznań on Friday.
