This year's camps, which are being held for the 11th time, kicked off in the central Polish city of Łódź, where Gortat was born.

Duda thanked Gortat for "sharing the fruits of his great sporting success."

Gortat has just finished his 11th season in the NBA. He has recently joined the Los Angeles Clippers after five years with the Washington Wizards.

Duda in May presented Gortat a Polish state decoration, the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit.

Gortat, who began his international career 15 years ago, has often spoken about his love for Poland and his pride of being Polish.

He organises the annual Polish Heritage Night in the United States, an event that celebrates Poland and its traditions.
