Polish athletes scored a combined total of 162 points, coming in behind the US, which had 219 points.
Polish champion Anita Włodarczyk came first in the women's hammer with a 78.74-metre throw.
“London is a happy place for me,” Włodarczyk told Polish public broadcaster TVP. “I won Olympic gold and the world championships here,” she added.
Other Polish winners included Wojciech Nowicki, with a 77.94-metre result in the men’s hammer; Sofia Ennaoui, who finished the women’s 1,500-metre race in 4:07.66; Marcin Lewandowski, who finished the men’s race in 3:52.88; Michał Haratyk, who threw 21.95 metres in the shot put, and Karol Hoffman with a 16.74-metre result in the men’s triple jump.
Poland, the US, Jamaica, China, South Africa, Germany, France and the UK were invited to take part in the meet, which offered a prize pool of USD 2 million (PLN 7.37 million) and a platinum winner's trophy worth GBP 300,000 (PLN 1.5 million), making it the most expensive cup in sport, according to the competition's organisers.
The winning team went home with a cheque for USD 450,000 while Poland was awarded USD 400,000.
