Jerzy Brzęczek is taking over as Poland manager after the national squad's early World Cup exit disappointed fans.

Brzęczek, a former Poland captain, replaces Adam Nawałka, who is quitting at the end of this month after the team’s lacklustre performance at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Brzęczek unveiled his plans for the squad during a press conference in Warsaw on Monday. He said he wants Poland to play attacking football.

Brzęczek, 47, had a professional career that spanned nearly 20 years and brought him 42 international caps as a midfielder with Poland.

He captained the national team when they won silver at the 1992 Summer Olympics. He later spent 12 years playing abroad from 1995 to 2007. He most recently worked as manager for top-flight Polish side Wisła Płock.

Poland failed to advance to the knockout phase of the World Cup in Russia after losing 1-2 to Senegal and 0-3 to Colombia in the group stage. Poland won their final game, beating Japan 1-0, but finished bottom of their Group H and made an early exit from the tournament.

Poland finished third in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany and were also third in Spain in 1982.
