A record 86 Polish competitors will take part in the championships, which will be held in Berlin from August 6 to 12.

Krzysztof Kęcki, the sports director of the Polish Athletics Association, said he had his eye on eight gongs.

But state news agency PAP said some commentators believed Poland had a chance of bringing home 20 medals.

Anita Włodarczyk is being tipped as a good bet for gold in the hammer throw.

Poland finished top of the league in terms of medals at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016, with six golds, five silvers and one bronze.

It was Poland’s first time at the top of the table.
