Athletics: Shot put gold for Poland’s Paulina Guba

Poland’s Paulina Guba took the gold in the women's shot put at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin on Wednesday, winning her country’s fifth medal in Germany.

Until the final round Guba was in second place behind Germany’s Christina Schwanitz, but then came up with a winning throw of 19.33 metres.

Poland is in the lead in the overall medals table at the championships.

On Tuesday, Poland’s Michał Haratyk won the gold in the men's shot put while his countryman Konrad Bukowiecki took the silver in Berlin.

Earlier that day, Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki won gold and Paweł Fajdek took the silver in the men’s hammer throw.

Polish sports bosses have said they are hoping for eight medals in Berlin. A record 86 Polish competitors are taking part in the championships.

Poland finished top of the league in terms of medals at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016, with six golds, five silvers and one bronze.
