Field hockey: Poland thrash Cyprus 17-0

Poland have routed Cyprus 17-0 in a field hockey match that marked the start of a campaign to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.

The victory on Tuesday saw the Polish national men's field hockey team clearing the first hurdle on the road to qualifying for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Mikołaj Gumny and Mateusz Hulbój each scored three goals for the Polish team in the match, which was played as part of the first round of the Hockey Series Open tournament in Gniezno, central-western Poland.

The Poles, coached by Karol Śnieżek, were on Wednesday set to take on Lithuania in their next match at the tournament.

The two best teams of the Hockey Series Open tournament will advance to the next round of Olympic qualifiers.
