Hurkacz, who is 109th in the world ranking, was defeated 2-6, 0-6, 0-6 in the second round on Thursday local time.

Cilic, a former US Open champion, beat Hurkacz at the same stage during this year's French Open.

The 21-year-old Pole on Tuesday triumphed against Italy’s Stefano Travaglia in their first-round men's singles match at Flushing Meadows.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Agnieszka Radwańska and Magda Linette both crashed out of the women's singles at the US Open in the first round on Monday.

In the women's doubles, Linette and her Croatian-born Australian partner Ajla Tomljanović have made it into the second round.
