Poland’s prime minister has allocated an extra multi-million government subsidy to keep up the country’s prowess in the sport of volleyball, officials have said.

The PLN 15 million (EUR 3.5 mn, USD 4 mn) subsidy benefitting the Polish Volleyball Federation, the nation’s governing body in the sport, will in part go toward bonuses for players who recently won a world championship gold for their country, Poland’s PAP news agency has reported.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in early October praised the Polish men’s volleyball team for becoming world champions for the second time in a row.

Meeting the players at the Prime Minister’s Office in Warsaw at the time, Morawiecki congratulated the team and promised "significant" funding for volleyball to ensure an influx of young players and maintain Poland's successes in the sport, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Poland’s Sports Minister Witold Bańka said on Thursday: "This additional support will make it possible to achieve further sporting goals and build the potential of Polish volleyball."

Poland beat Brazil 3-0 in the final of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championships in Turin, Italy on September 30, defending their title and claiming their third world championship gold after wins in 2014 in Poland and in 1974 in Mexico.
