Wielicki received this year's Princess of Asturias Award for Sport from Spain's King Felipe VI at a ceremony in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo on Friday, sharing the prize with Italian climber Reinhold Messner.

The annual Princess of Asturias awards, which are given out in eight different categories, are known as the “Nobel Prizes” of the Spanish-speaking world.

Other prizewinners this year included US filmmaker Martin Scorsese, marine biologist Sylvia Earle, French crime writer Frederique Audoin-Rouzeau, and Swedish geneticist Svante Paabo.

Wielicki, aged 68, is a leading Polish mountain climber who has scaled all 14 of the world’s peaks over 8,000 metres. He is also known for his daring ascents in the Himalayas in harsh winter conditions.

Polish poet Adam Zagajewski last year won the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature.
