Poland will be hosting full-contact karate world championships for the first time, the PAP news agency reported, citing Remigiusz Karpiński, head of the Polish Karate Shinkyokushinkai Federation.

The country has previously hosted European championships several times, according to PAP.

Isa Kobayashi, vice-president of the World Karate Organization, told a news conference in Warsaw on Thursday that full-contact karate was popular in Poland and that Polish karatekas were among the world’s best, PAP reported.

Poland has been chosen over Brazil to host the 2021 event, according to public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.

The championships will be held at Warsaw’s Torwar arena, IAR reported.
