Poland’s top ski jumper Kamil Stoch, a triple Olympic champion, placed eighth, adding to a somewhat disappointing day for the Polish team amid high hopes.

Japan's Ryoyu Kobayashi, who leads this season’s World Cup standings, won Sunday's competition, ahead of second-placed Markus Eisenbichler of Germany and third-placed Stefan Kraft of Austria.

The Four Hills Tournament, which is part of the ski-jumping World Cup circuit, features a series of four competitions taking place in Germany and Austria every year.

The next stop after Oberstdorf is Germany’s Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where the world's top ski jumpers are set to compete on Tuesday.

After that the series will move to Austria for events in Innsbruck on January 4 and Bischofshofen on January 6.

Poland’s Stoch won last season’s Four Hills Tournament and also triumphed at the 2016/2017 tournament, ahead of teammate Żyła and another Pole, Maciej Kot, in fourth place.

Polish ski jumpers last month won a World Cup team competition in Wisła, southern Poland.
