The Pole scored Sunday a total of 16.5 points, 0.5 point less than the champion, Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, the classic chess world titleholder.

American Hikaru Nakamura won bronze, with 14.5 points.

The Polish grandmaster, aged 22, took 13th place in the rapid chess championship on Friday.

Duda is considered Poland’s chess golden child and has been successful in the field since age 5, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.

At age ten, he became the chess world runner-up in his age category. His achievements include the European rapid chess champion title at age 16.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki congratuled Duda on Twitter. He said: “Recent years have seen great progress being made in the field.”
