Polish climber evacuated from K2

Polish climber Waldemar Kowalewski was on Tuesday evacuated by helicopter from K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, following an injury.

Kowalewski was hit by a falling rock while taking part in an international expedition to scale the peak in winter.
“While carrying heavy objects I can feel pain in my left arm. I think I have broken something inside,” the onet.pl website has quoted Kowalewski as saying.
The team, led by Spain's Alex Txikon and including two other Poles, Paweł Dunaj and Marek Klonowski, has now reached 6,700 metres.
Another team, led by Kazakhstan’s Vassily Pivtsov and made up of climbers from Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, has reached 6,600 metres.
The summit of K2 has never been scaled in winter.
In March last year, a Polish expedition abandoned its attempt to reach the summit due to bad weather.
Another Polish expedition to K2 is planned for the beginning of next year.
