The Pole on Saturday claimed silver in the women’s 500 metres event at a World Cup stop in Turin, Italy.

Italy’s Martina Valcepina took the gold, and Kim Boutin of Canada rounded off the podium in third place.

With a series of strong finishes this season, Maliszewska appeared to be safely in the lead over the rest of the field ahead of the World Cup circuit’s last competition on Sunday.

The 23-year-old was set to become the first Pole to win an overall short-track speed skating World Cup title.

Maliszewska last month took the gold in the women’s 500 metres at the European Short Track Speed Skating Championships in the Dutch city of Dordrecht.
