Maliszewska on Saturday claimed silver at a World Cup stop in Turin, Italy and all but secured the overall World Cup title in the women’s 500 metres with one competition to go before the end of the season.

With a series of strong finishes this season, Maliszewska appeared to be safely in the lead over the rest of the field ahead of the World Cup circuit’s last competition on Sunday.

The Pole on Sunday defended her lead in the overall standings and was crowned the 2018/2019 Short Track Speed Skating World Cup winner in the women’s 500 metres.

President Andrzej Duda said on Twitter: "Natalia Maliszewska has won the short track World Cup. Bravo! Historic success! Congratulations and thank you!"

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki tweeted: "Heartfelt congratulations to Natalia Maliszewska, who has sealed her World Cup victory in beautiful style! This is a historic success for Polish short-track skating, adding to hopes for a gold medal at the world championships in Sofia."

The 2019 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria from March 8 to 10.

Maliszewska in January took the gold in the women’s 500 metres at the European Short Track Speed Skating Championships in the Dutch city of Dordrecht.
