The decision caused surprise – it came less than a month before the Pole’s planned fight with Dominican Edwin Rodríguez.

Fonfara, 31, said on social media that his “heart is not in boxing any more.”

The Pole, who held the IBO light heavyweight title from 2012 to 2013, made his professional debut in Poland at the age of 18.

He later moved to the United States. He won 30 of his 36 professional fights, 18 of them by knockout.

He had been due to take on Rodríguez in Carson, California, on March 9.
