Tennis: Poland’s Świątek into quarter-final at Lugano

Rising Polish tennis star Iga Świątek has made it into the quarter-final of the WTA Samsung Open in Lugano, notching up a career first.

The17-year-old Pole on Thursday beat Slovakia’s Viktória Kužmová, the no. 3 seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the round of 16 at the Swiss tournament.
Świątek was on Friday taking on Belarusian Vera Lapko, the no. 8 seed, in a bid for a place in the semi-final.
Świątek last year won the junior singles title at the Wimbledon tennis championships in London.
