Gortat, who has been dubbed “The Polish Hammer,” has only one condition – that PZKosz (the Polish Basketball Association) covers his insurance tag, which comes in at about 1 million zloty (255,000 euro).

“I’m very excited,” says the 27-year-old.

“It’s the first time I’ll be going into the grouping as a player who has to help others,” he mused, adding that “up until now, I’ve rather learned from older colleagues.”

The European Basketball Championships are due to hosted in Lithuania, with the showdown starting on 31 August. (nh/jb)
