Melikson, who plays his club football for Wisla Krakow, has already played for Israel's youth teams and even scored a goal for Israel in a friendly against the Ivory Coast this August.

Grzegorz Lato, chairman of the Polish Football Association (PZPN) is backing the Wisla player.

“While talking with me, Maor expressed an unequivocal desire to play for Poland,” said Lato.

According to the Polish football chief, “it's just a matter of time” before he is called up to play for the national side.

Melikson's mother was born in Legica, south west Poland, but emigrated to Israel with her family when she was six-years-old. (nh/pg)
