The recently opened National Stadium in Warsaw will not be staging the planned Super Cup between Wisla Krakow and Legia Warszawa, city authorities have announced.

“The organizer [of the Super Cup] has not complied with the requirements that guarantee the complete safety of the event,” said Town Hall spokesperson Ewa Gawor.

The Super Cup – a special competition between Wisla Krakow, last season’s winners of the Ekstraklasa first division and Legia Warszawa, who won the Polish Cup, was to take place on 11 February at the National Stadium, which opened in January after months of delay.

But due to health and safety concerns the match - the first football event scheduled to take place at the stadium, especially built to host the Euro 2012 championships – will now not go ahead.

Last Sunday, an inaugural concert at the stadium, featuring Polish rock bands, was attended by more than 40,000 people.

The opening match of the Euro 2012, between Poland and Greece, will take place at the national Stadium on 8 June. (pg)
