The Polish Super Cup had to be cancelled at Warsaw's new National Stadium this weekend because of failures by organisers, Ekstraklasa SA, says Poland's sports minister.

“Ekstraklasa SA must ensure safety and not pretend it is providing security,” Minister Joanna Mucha said, Thursday as a final decision to cancel the first competitive match in the newly opened stadium was taken by police and emergency services.

The stadium, which will host the opening match of the Euro 2012 football championships in June, has not been given safety certificates to be able to hold up to 40,000 spectators for the Super Cup match between Legia Warszawa (who won the Polish Cup last year) and Wisla Krakow, the Ekstraklasa first division champions.

Minister Joanna Mucha assured, however, that the planned friendly match between Poland and Portugal on 29 February will go ahead at the National Stadium as planned. (pg)
