Legia, last season's Polish Cup champions, twice lost the lead in the match after goals from Jakub Wawrzyniak in the first half and Janusz Gol in the 79th minute.

But Sporting Lisbon's Andre Bernardes Santos came off the bench to clinch a late equaliser, to take the tie back to Portugal next week with the home side clearly favourites to go through to the last eight of the competition at the expense of Legia Warszawa.

Legia trainer, Maciej Skorża, said that this was a tough beginning to the new year after the mid-season winter break in Poland.

“This was the first match for us this year and it was very difficult. I'm happy with my team, which impressed me with its will to fight. But I am certainly not happy with the result.” (pg)
