Kraków obwarzanek is a registered regional delicacy and are hand made, with a specific production process that includes heating the dough.

Only 16 bakeries in the region have the licence to make the bagel.

For a year producers, as well as local authorities have been demanding prosecutors to take action, as estimates are that up to a quarter of the bagels sold in the streets of Kraków are not the authentic product.

Because of the big demand, some dishonest makers produce the bagels by machine.

Prosecutors will now be checking carts and bakeries, and possibly also requesting expert opinions in order to guarantee authenticity of the bagels sold in Kraków. (ek/pg)
