The horrific crash happened in the last race league match between Falubaz Zielona Góra and GKM Grudziądz.

"The state of Darcy Ward is stable. The player is breathing on his own and answering questions," Robert Zapotoczny, a doctor for Ward’s club, Falubaz, said.

After surgery at the local hospital it was reported that the 23-year-old had a broken spinal cord section, which is responsible for the lower body.

Ward reportedly had "no lower body feeling" after the crash.

At a press briefing Zapotoczny was somewhat sparing with his words. "In medicine, you always have hope," he told reporters.

The 23-year old won the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Australian Under-21 Championships as well as the 2009 and 2010 World Under-21 Championships. (jh/rk)
