“I think that like most of these kinds of regimes, there was a very small percentage of fanatics, and then in society, there was a very small percentage of people who were willing to lay down their lives to fight back,” the author told our reporter Nick Hodge.

Last Sunday, Anne Applebaum was among those decorated by President Komorowski during the Independence Day honours, accepting the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.

Her new book, Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe 1944-1956, focuses on the parallel experiences of Poland, Hungary and East Germany under communist rule.
