“Many voters didn’t know Anna Grodzka was a transsexual,” says LGBT rights defender.

The recently proposed candidacy of Poland’s first transgender MP Anna Grodzka for the post of deputy speaker has stirred much controversy across parliament and beyond.

A survey run by pollster Homo Homini shows that 55 percent of Poles would not like to see a transsexual deputy parliamentary speaker, compared to 31 in favour.

Meanwhile, another survey, carried out by pollster ARC, indicates that Poles are rather more concerned with competencies rather than gender, as over 60 percent of the respondents were either indifferent to the prospect of a transsexual taking up one of the key posts in parliament, or had a positive attitude towards it.

We talk to LGBT rights activist Mirosława Makuchowska, from Campaign Against Homophobia.
